Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update – Update on COVID-19 Cases; Hospitalization Rates Show Progress, Slowing Rate; More Local Governments in Illinois Requiring Face Masks
|
Update on COVID-19 cases:The Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) is now reporting a total of 1,349 deaths, an increase of 59 deaths since yesterday. There are currently 31,508 positive cases of COVID-19 in Illinois, which is an increase of 1,151 from yesterday.
In total, 148,358 people have now been tested in Illinois for the virus, which is an increase of 5,040 as of yesterday. Of those people tested, 21.2% of the results are positive for COVID-19, which is an increase of 0.1% since yesterday.
You can check where these cases are occurring at the State of Illinois COVID-19 website which also contains more information on this outbreak. Also, IDPH has a case breakdown of the number of positive cases in Chicago and each county relative to the number of fatalities. The IDPH website also now includes a breakdown of the cases under each zip code in the state. In addition, Western Illinois University has an put together this Map of COVID-19 Cases in Illinois & Surrounding States which gives you picture of where COVID-19 cases are occurring in relation to areas surrounding Illinois.
Worldometer also has a site with pertinent statistics on a state by state breakdown and comparison. Also, the City of Chicago has a good categorization of the cases within the city.
Hospitalization Rates Show Progress, Slowing Rate: At Governor Pritzker’s daily press conference, he provided a bit of encouraging news on hospitalization rates. Currently, only 4,599 of positive cases require hospitalization, which is only 14.5% of those testing positive. At this time, 1,239 of these patients are in ICU hospital beds, with 757 of them on ventilators, using only 23% of the state’s total inventory of ventilators.
At the beginning of April, 43% of the state’s 2700 ICU beds were occupied. As of yesterday, that percentage fell to 40% of now 3,134 beds. According to the state’s health experts, while the number of hospitalizations continue to increase, the state is seeing a slower rate of these increases.
More Local Governments in Illinois Requiring Face Masks: Today, the Village of Niles joined Northbrook, Morton Grove,Highland Park, Wilmette, Cicero, Skokie, and Glenview to the number of local governments which have initiated orders for residents to wear face masks at job sites and when in public settings like grocery stores, etc. If you know of other units of local governments doing the same, please let CICI know so we can share with the CICI membership.
