Afternoon Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update – 1,535 Confirmed Cases, 16 Deaths; Interactive Website for Illinois Manufacturers, Suppliers; Unknown When General Assembly Will Reconvene in Springfield

At the time of this e-mail, the Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) is now reporting 16 deaths, out of 1,535 now-confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Illinois, an increase of 250 from yesterday. In total, 11,485 people have been tested for the virus. You can see where these cases are occurring at the State of Illinois COVID-19 website that also contains more information on this outbreak. In addition, Western Illinois University has an put together this Map of COVID-19 Cases in Illinois & Surrounding States to give you a better picture of where Covid-19 cases are at in relation to areas surrounding Illinois.

Of the confirmed cases, IDPH is breaking down the cases as follows:

  • 54% - Caucasian
  • 33% - African American
  • 11% - Latino/Hispanic
  • 5%   - Asian

In terms of severity of illness, IDPH data shows that 16% of COVID cases have resulted in hospitalization, 4% have resulted in ICU admission. Of the lives lost, 92% of those are older than 60.

Interactive Website for Manufacturers, Suppliers:  It is imperative to connect suppliers with those in need of supplies and to connect manufacturers with suppliers.  There are over 20 critical supplies needed to respond to COVID-19.  The Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) has set up an Interactive Website to connect relevant manufacturing sectors of the state to get vital products  - ventilators, N95 masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and disinfectants, and biohazard waste bags – to the front lines of this pandemic.  Please visit this website and see where your facility may be able to help get these products to where they are needed the most.

Session?  At this time, it is unknown when the Illinois General Assembly will reconvene in Springfield to finish up the remainder of this year’s session. The GA is making that determination on a day-by-day basis. They were set to reconvene next week but it’s doubtful that will happen. They were scheduled to begin a 2-week Spring Break starting April 3. Supposedly, deadlines for moving bills out of committee have been extended.  However, according to various press reports, when the legislature returns, the GA may only take up emergency legislation such as the budget and other legislation responding to Covid-19 outbreak.
