Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update – Social Gatherings Limited to 10 in Some Regions, Governor Hints at Another Possible Stay-at-Home Order; Hospitalization Rates Double in past 3 Weeks; Update on COVID-19 Cases

Social Gatherings Limited to 10 in Some Regions, Governor Hints at Another Possible Stay-at-Home Order: Even though indoor dining and bar service have been ordered shutdown and gatherings limited to 25 individuals throughout the entire state, many establishments have defied the governor’s orders, and local officials in some areas have refused to enforce them.

In response to this and an ever-increasing positivity rate, Governor Pritzker and the state’s public health officials this week have announced that gatherings will now be limited to 10 individuals, down from the previous 25, for Region 1 (Northwestern Illinois, Rockford), Region 5 (Southern Illinois), Region 7 (Kankakee, Will Counties), and Region 8 (DuPage, Kane Counties).

These regions are currently experiencing positivity rates of 13-17%.  In addition, the governor this week also hinted that a statewide “stay-at-home order” is back on the table as a possible step to bring the pandemic under control.  The Governor also mentioned increased enforcement from the Illinois State Police, pulling liquor licenses and video gambling permits.

Hospitalization Rates Double in past 3 Weeks: As of last night, 4,742 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 911 patients were in the ICU and 399 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.  Analyses of Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data project that Illinois will surpass its ICU bed capacity by Thanksgiving, and deaths per day will peak mid-December.

Update on COVID-19 Cases: IDPH is reporting 511,183 positive tests of COVID-19 in Illinois, an average increase of 11,410 new positive tests per day since reported here 4 days ago on November 6.  In total, 8,571,019 tests have now been conducted in Illinois for the virus, an average increase of 88,972 tests per day since November 6.  The state’s average positivity rate over all 11 regions is at 12% for the last week, but at 12.8% over the past 4 days.  You can see where the various regions are at in terms of their positivity rates, hospitalizations and other metrics at this link

Unfortunately, IDPH is reporting a total of 10,289 deaths, an average increase of 52 per day since November 4.

You can also check where these cases are occurring at the State of Illinois COVID-19 website which also contains more information on this outbreak.

Also, IDPH has a case breakdown of the number of positive cases in Chicago and each county relative to the number of fatalities.  The IDPH website also now includes a breakdown of the cases under each zip code in the state.
