In January 2025, the Illinois General Assembly seated the largest number of progressive lawmakers in the state’s history. Not surprisingly, these lawmakers pushed legislation aimed at crippling the state’s business community, with particular focus on the chemical industry. 

Fortunately, CICI’s lobbying initiative had remarkable success beating back numerous attempts to ban the industry’s products, as well as strangle us with burdensome regulations, expensive new energy mandates, workplace hiring restrictions, and numerous tax and fee hikes. 

Without a transformation in the state’s political make-up, our industry’s challenges will not only remain but will intensify well into 2026 and beyond. Our victories in the legislative arena may be short lived if progressive lawmakers gain further control of the legislature during the 2026 elections. 

For years we have warned the political winds are unfavorable, and now the warnings are more real and critical than ever. Partisan control of the U.S. Senate and House could turn on a dime. At the state level, many reliable lawmakers are retiring, opening the opportunity for progressives to further advance their control. CICI must seize the opportunity to help elect moderate legislators who support our industry as a vital cog in the state’s economy. 

In the past, CICI has been successful in stopping devastating legislation because our membership is engaged in the political process by supporting CHEMPAC and our active and experienced lobbying team. To make certain we put forth our best effort to meet the immerse challenges ahead, we need your redoubled commitment to CHEMPAC. Our request is simple: CICI needs to step up its game in retaining lawmakers and electing candidates who support our industry and can articulate how critical we are to the state’s overall economy.
