COOK COUNTY UTILITY TAXES STILL ALIVE

While the Stroger Administration did not specifically spell out a new natural gas and electricity tax for Cook County when he presented his budget a few weeks ago, but based on recent feedback that CICI has received it appears that these proposals are still very much alive. Given the political difficulties in finding the votes necessary for his proposed $900 million tax increase which includes increasing the county’s sales tax, motor fuel tax, and parking taxes, the proposed taxes on natural gas and electricity appears to still be an option for the Board.

If your facility is in Cook County and you haven’t done so already, it’s absolutely vital that you contact your Cook County Commissioner and urge them to either vote against the proposed taxes on natural gas and electricity or create an exemption for all natural gas and electricity used in production/manufacturing process.

These commissioners need to hear from you – their local employers as well as your employees – as to how devastating these proposed energy taxes will be to your company and your employees.

If you don’t already know who represents your facility in Cook County, follow this link and enter your address: http://www.civicfootprint.org/ . Contact information for your commissioner can be found here: http://www.cookctyclerk.com/sub/elected_officials_detail.asp?TYPE_ID=1&Title=Board%20of%20Commissioners

COM-ED SEEKS RATE INCREASE

As you’ve probably heard by now, Com-Ed is seeking permission from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to hike delivery service rates. This rate increase will disproportionately affect CICI’s members in Com-Ed’s service territory with some members experiencing delivery charge increases of up to 130%. According to the Com-Ed’s press release, this increase is necessary to allow the utility to continue expanding and upgrading its system to meet growing demand for electricity and to recover costs for everything from storm repairs to new infrastructure development. The ICC process will take roughly 11 months. CICI is working with other industry groups on how best to respond to Com-Ed’s request.
