Our environmental practice
consists of an
interdisciplinary team of
qualified attorneys,
paralegals and investigators
specializing in regulatory
environmental issues,
litigation, land use and
real estate, insurance and
governmental policy and
practice. We work closely
with those in our Corporate
Finance and Real Estate
practice groups in
negotiating environmental
provisions in transactional
documents and allocating
environmental risks and
liability relating to
transfer of interests in
real property. We also work
closely with our Litigation
practice group in the
prosecution and defense of
environmental actions.
Many of our attorneys have
prior training and
experience in a variety of
technical backgrounds, such
as public health, industrial
hygiene and toxicology,
chemistry and engineering,
as well as experience in the
public sector. We have a substantial
state-level environmental
practice counseling clients
in Illinois,

• serving as individual
company and common counsel
at a number of federal and
state Superfund sites in
U.S. EPA Region 5, including
significant experience in
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Ohio and Wisconsin;
•defending private CERCLA
Section 107(a) actions in
the Norther District of
Illinois and a Section 107
(a) action brought by U.S.
EPA Region 7 in Missouri;
• assisting a major
automotive supplier in
obtaining the first
hazardous waste management
unit closure permit from the
Indiana Department of
Environmental Management
based on an “alternate
concentration limit,”
including permit
negotiations, the filing of
a permit provision appeal
and coordination of expert
and community support for
our proposal;
• successfully representing
a pipeline company in an
permit appeal brought by a
municipality;
• representing a major
automotive supplier on a
significant air enforcement
matter that led to the first
successful and
cost-effective application
of air injection control
technology to address
emissions from engine
testing, resulting in
substantial savings on
penalties and operating
costs.
•successfully representing a
commercial landlord in an
action brought before the
Illinois Pollution Control
Board to require a tenant to
remediate a PCB-contaminated
commercial property to
within residential clean-up
objectives under TACO.
