Subject: Mission Statement Content:
The education outreach activities of the Chemical
Industry Council of Illinois are conducted through The Illinois
Chemical Education Foundation (ICEF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
foundation.
ICEF's Mission
IThe mission of ICEF is to promote better academic
understanding of the chemical industry. The foundation's
volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours each year to programs that
are committed to increasing high school and junior high school
student and teacher's awareness in an effort to generate interest
and enthusiasm for careers in scientific fields. To support this
mission, ICEF seeks to provide educational and financial support
for students, teachers and schools throughout the state of
Illinois.
ICEF Programs
Career Conference
The Career Conference, held annually at the Museum of Science
and Industry in Chicago, is a three part program designed to
introduce high school and junior high school students to careers
in the chemical industry and the concept of sound science. The
program includes a quiz game show on careers;
a chemistry demonstration show called Weird Science by Lee Marek and a hands-on,
interactive industry exhibit area. To date, approximately over 75,000 students
have attended the Career Conference.
Scholarship Program
Every spring the Foundation presents six scholarships to
Illinois high school and undergraduate science students. The
$2,000 scholarships are presented to students who demonstrate
academic excellence in the pursuit of a science related career.
ICEF also annually awards a $3,000 Davidson Award to the
top high school chemistry teacher in Illinois. Selection of the
Davidson recipient is based on a written application, peer
recommendations, student interviews and an in-class visit by
representatives from the selection committee.
For application information, please refer to the Scholarship
and Award Program.
Teacher's Workshop
The Teacher's Workshop is a specialized half-day program for
high school and junior high school science teachers that offers
practical information on industrial chemistry. The presentations
are provided by volunteers from the chemical industry and are
geared for hands-on applications in the classroom.
Career Panels - Classroom Visits
Upon request, representatives from the Foundation's Education
Committee will visit schools to discuss the broad and expanding
field of job opportunities available in the Illinois chemical
industry. These men and women are prepared to discuss what they
and their colleagues do on a day-to-day basis.
